September Meeting

September's meeting was held at Kevin's shop. We had some new members out and the main topic of the evening was to catch up on what everyone had built or was working on over the summer. Ed brought in an interesting brass lamp that he needed advice on as he wants to recreate the lamp out of wood. Kevin mentioned a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtrAWvbi_ik on how to do this. Kevin showed off his new 30" wood Jointer plane that he built this summer with Darryl and Mike.

The club has been getting many new requests and the membership is becoming reflective of a possible new direction. This will be discussed at the next meeting. Next meeting is Wednesday Oct 28th @ 7:00pm location to be announced.

March Meeting

This month we were at Tim's shop. Nice relaxed evening with lots to talk about.
Ed spoke about his latest Toys and Joys build which he is building 2 x 1931 Cadillac Roadster's.
We discussed finishing the model cars and Ed still spoke highly of Peter's tried and true 3 equal parts: oil, turpentine and varnish.

The topic of where to get wood came up and we all had our favourites to share:
We talked about upcoming events like:
  • Tools of the Trades Show and Sale
  • Niagara Woodcarvers Show at Heartland Forest
  • Wood Everything Show
  • The Wood Shed's 25th Anniversary
Kevin mentioned the new Bosch "Reaxx" flesh sensing technology saw.

The idea was thrown around about a Competition or challenge to be held within our group. Some ideas were:

February's Meeting

It was nice having the meeting in Kevin's shop. The main topic was supposed to be Darryl discussing and demonstrating more about hand planes but it seems like we all never really got there. A couple new people attended which helped bring new thoughts, ideas and questions that were all discussed and even displayed or demonstrated, as again we were inside a woodworking shop. We talked jigs, tools, wood and techniques which kept the discussions flowing all night long. Thank you to all that attended it was a fun night.

We still had some "plane" old fun though!

-We broke down the 9th annual Niagara Woodworking Show
-discussed upcoming shows:
-Hamilton Wood Show February 27-March 1
-Tools of the Trades on March 29th
-Wood Shed 25th anniversary June 13th

Tonight's meeting ran long again as everyone was engaged and people were again not afraid to ask for help and in an inviting forum, we all offered our knowledge and ideas.

So if you are reading this and have attended or wish to attend please know that this club is a an inviting open forum and welcomes all different skill sets and disciplines.

January Meeting

Well the weather outside was chilly but lots of great discussion was had by the fire. Ed kicked off show n tell with his latest Toys n Joys project a 1920's Ford truck.

Ed had an interesting way of using a router to create the wheels which created some real interest.

Don had an ingenious idea to reuse broken bandsaw blades as paint drying racks. Don also mentioned a Minwax oil modified wipe on poly.

Kevin started a discussion about next month's 9th annual Niagara Woodworking Show and is looking for volunteers to participate on behalf of the club at the show.

Peter and Ed mentioned a tried and true finish that Ed used on his toy Ford truck of:
-1 part high gloss polyurethane
-1 part pure turpentine
-1 part oil (tung or linseed)

Peter mentioned the work of Russ Fairchild and some writings he did on Woodcentral.

We had a good discussion at the end of the night about how to price your work. Some discussion around pricing a piece that you have already made and want to sell and another around how to price a custom project as per a customer's request. Everyone agreed that this was not an easy road to go down but some good discussions were had and some interesting ideas were thrown around.

The main topic of the night......

Darryl brought in an assortment of hand planes and discussed the history of planes and some tips and techniques on how to tune, sharpen and use planes. The idea for next meeting was suggested since we will no longer be using the Community Center in favour of utilizing each other's wood shops that we demonstrate on the bench how to use both both wood and steel body wood planes. The suggestion was also made that if anyone wanted to bring in their wood plane or planes to the next meeting we could look at specifics for that plane and seeing about getting those planes to shaving those .001" shavings that Darryl talks about.

Next meeting will be in Kevin's wood shop on Wednesday February 11th, 2015 at 7:00pm. Please check your email for directions to Kevin's shop. If you are not a member and wish to join the club and attend please email Kevin: biff_kpv@yahoo.ca
